Salar de Uyuni: Formation, Geology & The Worlds Largest Salt Mirror

We chose a Spanish-speaking tour, and our basic Spanish was more than enough. It’s worth mentioning that you will spend most of your time in the car. So, below are a few points to know before choosing a tour. I recommend booking in person, as it’s usually cheaper.

On both tours, the food was great, and there was plenty of it — we couldn’t even finish everything. The first night’s accommodation (salt hotel) was very clean and comfortable, with fresh bedsheets, towels, and toilet paper provided. Don’t underestimate the altitude and make sure to acclimatise before taking a tour. Most tours are conducted in 4WD vehicles, with the driver also acting as the guide. I’ve done the 3-day Salar de Uyuni tour twice with different agencies, eight years apart, in 2017 and 2025.
One-day tours generally visit the Train Graveyard, Colchani, salt flats and Incahausi Island. If taking a multi-day tour of the salt flats, it’s likely you’ll spend the night at one of the area’s unique salt hotels. Snacks and water/drinks – food is provided, but in case you want extra in between the meals, pack some snacks and drinks. The itinerary is similar to the standard 3-day tour, just in reverse, but this route is usually more expensive. Tupiza is another starting point for alternative Salar de Uyuni tours. A 2-day tour from Uyuni covers everything included in the 1-day tour. A 1-day tour from Uyuni is the cheapest option to explore Salar de Uyuni. Most tours to Salar de Uyuni start from the small town of Uyuni.

What will happen to Salar de Uyuni in the future? (Climate + human impact)

These islands are the tops of ancient volcanic domes that remained above water even when the whole area was a lake.As the lakes dried and the salt crust formed, the domes stayed as isolated high points. Since the salt flat is already extremely smooth, this water film becomes a near-perfect reflective layer. When water levels dropped, evaporation increased.And every time the water pulled back, it left behind thick salt deposits, clays, silts, and evaporite minerals. This is produced by a water layer that sits on top of the salt in the wet season (December to April). It’s also possible to take private tours for the ultimate customised experience.

If you are coming from Argentina it is possible to book tours that begin in Tupiza. Most people time their arrival for the morning of the start of their tour. There is nothing really of interest in Uyuni itself so it’s not worth spending much time here. Be aware that December and January are the wettest months and sometimes excessive rain can lead to tour cancellations. The clear night skies offer great star-gazing opportunities and you’ll also be able to visit some places that aren’t accessible during the wet season.

Its remarkable design features walls, floors, furniture, and even igloo-shaped roofs constructed from salt blocks that are carefully harvested from the surrounding salt flat. The dry season, which lasts from May to November, offers clear skies and the opportunity to observe the unique hexagonal salt patterns. The night sky is bright with stars, constellations, and even Milky Way which is perfectly reflected on the mirror-like surface with minimal light pollution and high altitude (wet season). Plenty of travellers opt for the most basic Salar de Uyuni tour and have a fantastic time. There are options for one, two or three-day tours to Salar de Uyuni (some companies also have four-day options). Note that Chile is a much more expensive country to travel than Bolivia and as such tours booked and beginning in San Pedro tend to be more expensive than those in Bolivia. Most tours will visit the geysers at sunrise when the dawn light and rising steam combine to create an ethereal atmosphere.
Some people decide to skip Isla Incahuasi and just walk around it to save 30 Bs, but I think it’s money well spent. There’s a short walk to the top of the island, and the entry fee is 30 Bs (not included in the tour price). Except for two cacti-filled islands, Salar de Uyuni is completely flat, creating an endless horizon perfect for fun perspective shots. Salar de Uyuni is a paradise for photographers. This is the area where salt is dug up, piled into large pyramid-shaped mounds, and left to dry in the sun.
Salar de Uyuni spreads over 10,582 km2, which is roughly 100 times the size of the Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States. The youngest prehistoric lake was Coipasa, which was radiocarbon dated to 11,500 to 13,400 years ago. Some 30,000 to 42,000 years ago, the area was part of a giant prehistoric lake, Lake Minchin.

Best time to visit Salar de Uyuni

It’s an absolute must-visit if you’re exploring Bolivia and South America. It’s a vast expanse of salt stretching to the horizon. If you’re travelling from Peru, the easiest route is via Peru Hop to La Paz, followed by the overnight bus to Uyuni. The most popular starting point for exploring Salar de Uyuni is the town of Uyuni, especially for travellers coming from within Bolivia. December offers the most sunshine, with an average of 7 hours of sunlight per day. January is the hottest month in Uyuni, with an average temperature of 15 °C (59 °F), while July is the coldest, averaging 12 °C (54 °F).
But in the wet season, a thin layer of water transforms the surface into the world’s largest mirror, reflecting the blue altiplano sky and the clouds. We visited these hot springs on our 2017 tour. There is some variation in which hot springs are included in Uyuni tours, depending on the agency. On our first tour, it wasn’t part of the itinerary, but our driver still offered to take us to watch the sunset before heading to the salt hotel. And the views of the salt flats from up there are absolutely incredible.
